About the Program of Midwifery

The University has started training of midwifery program in 2009. It has 231 midwifery students since its inception to June 2013. Among these it has graduated 19 BSc midwifery students in 2013. The university has aimed to train midwifery students to meet the MDG program. In general in 2013 both the program of nursing and midwifery has 836 students running with 8 master’s instructors, three BSc in midwifery, one BSc in nursing and one BSc in psychiatry instructors. For 2013/14 the department is expecting 4 masters’ graduate staffs will join the department and 4 BSc in nursing and 3 BSc in midwifery will be recruited. Among these, two BSc midwives and one BSC in nursing instructors will go for their MSc training in the coming year. Again 3 staffs are being on their training for their MSc and will graduate at June 2014. The rest two are Demonstration room technicians one studying her BSc at wollega university. There are three female instructors and two demonstration room technicians.

The students in this department are being trained both in theory and practice. The theories are given in the classroom with student centered approach and practical attachments are provided in the demonstration room and at more than nine hospitals and more than 10 health centers for team training programs found in western Ethiopia. Name of the hospitals are Nekemte, Gimbi , Nedjo, Dembidollo, Shambu, Gida, Bedelle, Metu, assosa and Jimma hospitals.

Concerning the demonstration room, equipments were procured and gained by donation from NGOs like GhPiego, I-cap Ethiopia. Demonstration room Technicians were recruited both for nursing and midwifery programs. But it is not separated for nursing and midwifery programs. There are still many types of equipment that needs to be fulfilled. The future plan of the department is to open MSc in Adult health nursing and maternity nursing to fulfill the health needs of the country and the Millennium Development Goal.  The community service provided by the department is providing seminar presentation on pain management for Medical and health science staffs and students and training at different times on Reproductive health for Wollega University and other places. With research there are four publications and proposals are on progress for the near future. There are also progressions of lecture note and glossary preparation by the staffs of the department.


  • To provide a high quality education that prepares midwives to become competent, entrepreneurial and ethical and compassionate midwives, who will provide service at primary, secondary and tertiary level of care settings?
  •  Providing professional service for individuals, family and community in all areas both for rural and urban populations.
  • To produce a competent professional in midwifery who is able to provide a primitive, Preventive, curative and rehabilitative midwifery reproductive health services at all levels of health care system


The vision of the department is to have healthy, productive, competent, ethical and innovative citizen throughout the country. 

Objectives of the Program:

 On successful completion of the program, newly   qualified midwife will be able to:

  • Have the requisite knowledge and skill from the social sciences, public health and ethics that form  the basis of high quality, culturally relevant,  appropriate care for women, newborns, and  families;
  • Enhance professional midwifery expertise through the application of knowledge,   attitude and skills
  • Enable midwives to pursue actively the promotion of high quality, cost effective & efficient service for women & their families.
  • Utilize effectively relevant research to guide, inform, underpin practice & participate in the research process.
  • To Engage in collaborating work with  agencies and other health care professionals for the benefit of women and their families
  • Enhance the standard of midwifery education and practice in Ethiopia
  • Assess  common child hood illnesses and manage in the context of IMNCI
  • Enable learners to assess growth and development, nutritional and  psychosocial needs of children at different age and manage accordingly
  • Enable to demonstrate leadership qualities and decision making abilities in various situations
  • Demonstrate skills in teaching , managing, interpersonal relations and  communication
  •  Enable learners to diagnose, manage and treat mothers based on obstetric technology
  • Enable to engage in prevention,  supportive and care provision  activities of HIV/AIDS
  • Enable to Provide counseling on FP , infant feeding and other related services Practice standard infection prevention techniques 

Entry requirements:

  • Admissions to all regular undergraduate programs are processed through Ministry of Education.
  • Have natural science back ground.
  • Physically fit Admission requirement for advance standing student: To be eligible for admission into the advance standing midwifery program, a candidate should:
  • Fulfill the stated criteria by the Ministry of Education
  • Have graduated from an accredited college/school with diploma in midwifery
  • Have obtained a minimum of 2 or 60% cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in previous diploma program.
  • Have served in midwifery for a minimum of 2 years Present letter of sponsorship or letter of release from employing institution.
