In October 2026, Wollega University’s School of Veterinary Medicine Female Makerspace Center, under the Ethiopia–Djibouti Female at Makerspaces (EtD-FaM) Project, successfully conducted a one-day training for more than 60 female veterinary students enrolled in Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Veterinary Laboratory Technology (VLT), and Veterinary Science programs, from second year onward. The training took place at the Female Makerspace Center, School of Veterinary Medicine, Wollega University.
The training focused on academic engagement, building support networks, addressing gender challenges, time management, and personal development.
Ms. Wangelawit Mathewos, representing Wollega University’s Gender and Social Affairs Directorate, officially opened the training and reaffirmed the Directorate’s commitment to supporting female students.
Mrs. Desta Risa, EtD-FaM Female Makerspace Leader and Head of the Veterinary Pathology and Parasitology Department, emphasized the importance of nurturing confident, competent, and exemplary female students who can serve as role models and succeed academically and professionally.
Dr. Lema Yimer, Vice Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine, appreciated the Female Makerspace leaders and encouraged students to pursue academic excellence and personal development. Dr. Ayantu Mokonnen delivered a session on above topics and shared valuable experiences and practical strategies for achieving academic success.
The interactive training enabled students to share experiences, discuss gender-related challenges, and propose practical solutions. During the feedback session, participants appreciated the initiative and requested that similar training opportunities continue and be extended to all female students to promote wider participation, confidence, and academic success.
