The Geology Department at Wallaga University, Gimbi Campus, has identified and submitted several relevant and practical research projects that align with local geological conditions, community needs, and the University’s applied science mission. As a future plan, the department aims to strengthen and expand these initiatives into long-term, multidisciplinary programs that contribute to regional development and scientific advancement. In collaboration with the Geological Survey of Ethiopia (GSE), the National Disaster Risk Management Commission (NDRMC), and the Ministry of Water and Energy, it seeks to establish a sustainable framework for data collection, analysis, and dissemination that supports both academic research and community based problem solving.
Future activities will focus on integrating student led fieldwork and laboratory research with national development priorities such as mineral resource exploration, landslide mitigation, and groundwater development. The department also plans to develop partnerships with international universities and research organizations to attract funding, access advanced technologies, and promote joint supervision of postgraduate research. Through these efforts, the Geology Department aspires to become a center of excellence in Applied Geosciences, providing practical solutions to geological and environmental challenges in Gimbi and its surroundings while fostering hands on education and sustainable regional development.
Wallaga University Gimbi Campus Geology department under Faculty of Natural and Environmental Science. Gimbi Campus has several faculties including Natural & Environmental Sciences. The program is designed to promote applied research in areas such as resource exploration, hydrogeology, environmental geology, and geo-hazard assessment.
The Geology Department plays a vital role in advancing knowledge about the Earth’s structure, composition, and dynamic processes. Through its well-designed academic programs, it equips students with both theoretical understanding and practical field experience in areas such as Mineral Exploration, Environmental Geology, Geological Mapping Geotechnical Studies, and Hydrogeology.
The department’s commitment to applied learning and research contributes significantly to sustainable natural resource management and disaster risk reduction. Its dedicated staff, modern teaching approach, and emphasis on hands on training make it a center of excellence in earth science education.
The admiration for the Geology Department stems from its continuous effort to inspire curiosity, promote innovation, and prepare future geoscientists who can address global and local environmental challenges with professionalism and integrity.
The Geology Program, established in 2017, is designed to provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in earth sciences. The program focuses on areas such as mineral and energy resource exploration, hydrogeology, environmental geology, and geo-hazard assessment.
Candidates seeking admission to the Geology Program are required to meet the university’s general entrance requirements for science disciplines. Admission is open to students who have successfully completed preparatory education in the Natural Science stream or hold equivalent qualifications recognized by the Ministry of Education.
The program offers a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Geology, with a strong emphasis on fieldwork, laboratory training, and applied research that address real-world geological challenges and support sustainable development
